Three years ago, my husband had just passed the five week post liver transplant mark and was well onto the road to recovery.
Fast forward to today, and he has completed another goal on his list.
He participated in the Run Melbourne 10km run, and despite being somewhat nervous, he did it easily…looked like he could have kept running!
I wish I could have done the 10km with him, but running is not something I feel comfortable doing, so I was support crew and photographer…what I didn’t realise was just how many people would be running and spectating!
My husband was in Wave D for the 10km and the line of people waiting seemed to go forever!
Despite a terrible weather forecast, Melbourne turned on a perfect morning, saving the rain till after the event finished…
Rather by good luck then design, I managed to get through the crowds and found a spot on the pedestrian bridge just in time to get a shot as he turned at the approx 7km mark…he is the one in the blue and white jumper and a beanie, just about to pass under the red arch…
If it hadn’t been for his donor and their family making the generous decision to allow organ donation, the sight of seeing him powering down the finishing straight would never of happened.
The blunt fact is without a new liver, he wouldn’t still be alive…full stop.
But instead, he crossed the finishing line…very much alive and well!
He was very happy with his time too…in his age category, he came 298 out 556, and overall was 1871 out of 6259!
I am so proud of this man and what he has achieved…in the past, there were times that I thought he wasn’t going to last another week.
Now I can’t keep up with him!
He is the perfect example of how organ donation can turn someone’s life around, and give them a second chance at life.
And we are not going to waste a moment!
